Lowy Distinguished Fellow in U.S.-Middle East Diplomacy
This fellowship for U.S.-Middle East Diplomacy was established in 2022 with a gift from Sir Frank Lowy and focuses on producing original insights and practical proposals to help U.S. policymakers navigate the complicated politics and challenges of the Middle East. The fellow also spearheads CFR’s collaborative activities with the Institute for National Security Studies (Israel) and the Lowy Institute (Australia).
Frank Lowy
Frank Lowy is chairman of LFG, the private investment business and family office of Lowy Family Group. He cofounded the global shopping center company Westfield in 1960 and served as its executive chairman for fifty years and as nonexecutive chairman between 2011 and 2018 when the company was acquired by Unibail-Rodamco. He is chairman of the Institute for National Securities Studies in Israel; chairman and founder of the Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank with a global outlook; chairman of the Lowy Medical Research Institute; and honorary chairman of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. Lowy served as chairman of the Football Federation of Australia, president of the board of trustees, and now life governor of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and a director of the Reserve Bank of Australia. He is a member of the Global Board of Advisors of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Lowy has received numerous honors and citations for his business and philanthropic activities. For his broad contribution to Israeli society, he received the Keren Hayesod’s Nadiv Award. He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Tel Aviv and New South Wales in Sydney. In Australia, he was awarded the country’s highest civilian honor, a companion of the Order of Australia. In June 2017, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Lowy for his contribution to the economy of the United Kingdom.
