Shelby Cullom and Kathryn W. Davis Senior Fellowship for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security

This fellowship supports a distinguished scholar or practitioner committed to the study of counterterrorism and national security and was created in recognition of the importance these issues have in the promotion of peace in the twenty-first century. The fellowship was started in 2010 by a generous gift from Kathryn W. Davis, late philanthropist and longtime CFR member, and has been subsequently supported by the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund.

Kathryn W. Davis (1907–2013)

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1907, Kathryn Wasserman Davis was a foreign affairs scholar, author, and distinguished philanthropist who worked throughout her life to promote lasting peace in the world. She began her remarkable career on staff here at the Council on Foreign Relations in the 1930s, and returned to the Council in 1988 as a member. She wrote on foreign affairs issues in several publications, including the Council’s The United States in World Affairs and Readers Digest, was a frequent lecturer for educational and civic groups in the United States and abroad, and was an engaged member or leader of numerous organizations. Davis served as a trustee of Wellesley College, the Youth Foundation, Seeds of Peace, and the Women’s National Republican Club, was a member of the New York Stock Exchange, and in 2000 launched Projects of Peace, an initiative to support student projects aimed at fostering peace.

As a philanthropist, Davis supported many causes, including education, peace promotion, and environmental preservation, and gave to organizations such as Wellesley College, Ploughshares Fund, Planned Parenthood, and Scenic Hudson. Her many achievements, both philanthropic and intellectual, earned her the 2006 Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service, an honor given to individuals who have served with distinction in public life. She was an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations from 1988 until her death at 105 in 2013.
